Frequently Asked Questions
Are your products vegan? Gluten Free? Organic?
All of the above! Our products are raw, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO and certified organic. Our facility is also allergen-free, meaning we do not process any nut products or other ingredients defined as allergens by the FDA.
WHy fermentation?
Good bacteria naturally thrive during fermentation creating a probiotic rich food. Probiotics have been shown to improve digestion, boost immunity, promote healthy weight and boost your gut health. Plus, we think it tastes better this way!
WHat is wild fermentation?
All our products are wild-fermented, meaning we rely on the naturally occurring bacteria and yeast to ferment our vegetables. Cultured fermentation relies on cultivated yeast, which are typically found in breads and some cultured dairy products. Wild-fermentation also means we never use vinegars - our ferments are the real deal!
Are your products shelf stable?
No - because our products are raw, fermented and never pasteurized, they should stay refrigerated before and after opening.
Oh no! I left my ferment out overnight. Is it ok?
Fermented foods are forgiving. If you forgot to refrigerate overnight, open it up and check for any growth on the surface. The first side effect of non-refrigerated fermented foods is pressure build up. You might noticed a “pop” when you open it up or, more dramatically, an overflow - this is ok. If the product has a white or dark yeast or mold-like substance on the surface, it’s probably time to compost it.
there’s white growth on top of my ferments. Is that mold?
If there is a white or cream-colored layer of growth that looks matte, that might just be kahm yeast. This is a common occurrence with fermented foods. Though it’s not harmful in the same way that mold is, it’s best to compost it. Email us here and we’ll get it sorted.
I just opened my jar - why is it fizzing?
Some ferments are a little more wild than others. A fizz may occur due to an active fermentation but it’s still good to eat. If there is no fizz, that’s not a bad sign either. It’s still fermented and rich in probiotics. These are living products so flavor and color may vary between batches.
Why doesn’t the lid pop when I open it?
This is a raw, non-pasteurized product. We do not heat process our products so you should never expect a “pop” when opening like you would get with shelf-stable products. We do shrink seal our ferments with a tamper-proof seal for safety.
Why is the lid plastic?
Metal lids are a little harder to work with on our production line and can sometimes oxidize on the shelf. We are constantly thinking of our sourcing and the materials we use, so you may see us switch things up from time to time.
Do you use distributors?
We do! For more information about distribution, click here.
